Report writing is a specialised form of communication written with the client in mind so that the client can form a clear picture of the contents of the report, and consequently be in a position to take an informed decision. In general terms, a report is an account of something which is presented in a standardised form. It conveys certain specific information to a specific reader or readers – often referred to as ‘Client’. In discharging this obligation, Estate Surveyors and Valuers has a compelling responsibility to ensure that whatever is presented to his client has the attributes of a good report. In a bid to ensure that this expectation is met at all times, this book, ‘A HANDBOOK OF REPORT WRITING’, succinctly examined the various aspects of the different types of report often prepared by the Estate Surveyor and Valuer in the course of his professional duties.
As a member of the noble profession of Estate Surveying and Valuation, the Estate Surveyor and Valuer has a compelling responsibility to ensure that any report presented to his clients has the attributes of a good and professional report. A professional must learn to cherish good reports, and there is no end to the improvement that could be made on any type of report emanating from his office. To this end, it is important that the Estate Surveyor and Valuer do not become too complacent with his present level of report standard; instead he should always strive to improve on whatever level of the set standard already achieved – a goal achievable with the help of this book.
Real estate transactions require reports. These reports are numerous and varied. It therefore becomes imperative that practising Estate Surveyors and Valuers, including Probationers and Students of Estate Management should be familiar with these different types of report that are often required and have to be prepared by them. These different types of report are the main focus of this Book. It is however appreciated that technical report writing is a matter for every profession; it is just that the perspective of the Estate Surveyor and Valuer is obviously different from that of other professionals such as a Linguist, an Architect or an Engineer. In fact, the Estate Surveyor and Valuer is a very versatile professional anywhere he is found and this might have accounted for the large volume of different kinds of reports, which he often generates at the instance of his numerous clients; hence the reason for devoting a substantial part of this Book to Estate Management related reports. This factor notwithstanding, issues that are of general application to any kind of report and which cut across every discipline, were equally covered by this book. Notable areas covered in this regard are principles of report writing, business reports and project/thesis writing – common areas for individuals and Students, irrespective of their different callings.
In summary, this BOOK is designed primarily for:
- Students of Estate Management, who must offer and pass Report Writing as one of their core courses,
- Candidates preparing for the final stages of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers’ professional examinations,
- Practicing Estate Surveyors and Valuers and they will find it particularly useful as a reference point in their day-to-day activities as every segment of reports, as prepared in practice, were extensively covered in the Book, and
- Professionals and Students in other disciplines, who would normally be required to produce one form of report or the other in the course of their various endeavours. This is because the general principles that guide a faultless report, no matter the different callings, were well covered in this Book as well.
- The general public, as they will now properly understand the nitty-gritty of report writing and I am confident that this will aid better understanding and thus appreciate the relentless efforts that go into report production.
Without doubt, this is one Book that everyone will find very useful irrespective of their different backgrounds and professional callings as far as real estate reports are concerned.
